Athletes will experience the sport of cheer in a fun, team-focused and competitive environment. Coaches will emphasize safety, teamwork, good sportsmanship and making good choices to become a better athlete and prepare athletes for future, higher level, cheer teams.
The Middle School Cheer team is designed for participants going into grades 5-8 for the 25/26 school year and is focused on fostering development in the sport of cheerleading. Previous cheer/gymnastics/dance experience is helpful for participating on this team, but not mandatory.
The season runs from June - February. Practices will be on Wednesday nights in the summer and Tuesday & Wednesday evenings during the school year. All practices will be held in the small gym at Minnetonka Middle School East. Participants are expected to fully commit to the team and be present prior to signing up and becoming a member. The team will perform at school sporting events, community events, and local/state cheer competitions.
*Please Note The Universal Cheer Association (UCA) states that participants have to attend a Minnetonka School to be eligible for this Minnetonka program.
To accommodate end of school year schedules, we are offering 2 sessions of the learning clinics.
Both sessions will be the same. During the 2 days of camp cheerleaders will learn the foundational skills of cheerleading; which consists of tumbling, stunting, jumps, and motions. Your cheerleader will learn everything they need to know for tryouts.
Cheerleaders may attend both sessions, but only 1 is required for tryouts.
Learning Camp #1: May 29th and May 31st from 6-7:30 pm
Learning Camp #2: May 31st from 2-5 pm
Tryout Day: June 3rd from 6-8:30 pm. Each athlete will attend a 30-minute time spot based on the grade they are going into. Athletes will wear white shoes, an all black athletic outfit, a bow with low curled ponytail, and red lipstick.
30 minute tryout will include: Effort & Coachability, Jump lines (double toe touch & pike) Tumbling skill of choice, Tryout cheer. We judge stunting ability during learning clinics.
Tryout Tips: We are looking for strong effort, energy, coachability, ability to lead a crowd, and a positive attitude. Cheerleaders must be passionate about cheerleading both inside and outside of practice. Cheerleaders are not expected to have material 100% memorized, but should be able to demonstrate the majority of it, and know what is being asked. All required material will be taught at the learning camps. Please note divisions are very competitive, and team placements will be as well.
Team placements will be emailed by the coaches the week following.
